Japan's trade ministry has issued a warning to Toray International, a subsidiary of major textile maker Toray Industries, over its transfer of carbon fiber products to third parties in China without government permission.
Carbon fiber is lighter and stronger than iron, and is used for various products including aircraft and automobiles. Since high-performance carbon fiber can be diverted for military use, its exports are strictly controlled, requiring government licensing.
The ministry said Toray International has been exporting carbon fiber products to China with an export license. But the firm reported in August that a portion of the products were transferred to third parties in China to which it had no license to export products.
